Who we are
We are a community based, non-profit legal legal clinic funded by Legal aid Ontario to provide free legal assistance to low income residents of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk Counties.
We are staffed by lawyers and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors which is elected annually from and by our general membership.
What you pay
There is no charge if you require information, assistance with group organization or a speaker for a community group.
If you require representation in court or at a hearing, there is also no charge if you fall within our financial eligibility guidelines. In this case, the only expense may be costs advanced for such things as court filing fees or medical reports.
What we do
We provide confidential legal information to individuals or groups.
We provide legal representation before certain courts and administrative tribunals for individuals and groups who meet our financial eligibility requirements.
We assist with the organization and development of community groups formed to advance the rights of low income persons and under-represented segments of the community.
We provide speakers to community groups interested in knowing about various areas of law.
Our services are concentrated in the areas of:
- Tenants Rights
- Welfare Rights (Ontario Works)
- Ontario Disability Program (ODSP)
- Unemployment Insurance
- Workers' Compensation
- Human Rights
- Canada Pension
We cannot advise or represent people in all areas of law. Where appropriate we refer individuals to other services in the community which can assist them in resolving their problems.
The clinic is comprised of individuals and group members who live in Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk Counties and are interested in the legal services that the clinic provides the community.
Being a member entitles you:
- To vote at the Annual General Meeting.
- To stand for election to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is the decision and policy making body for the clinic.
